Post-Treatment Advice: How to Recover After A Sports Therapy Appointment
Sports therapy is a fantastic way to reduce muscle tension, ease pain, and improve mobility, whether you're recovering from an injury or simply maintaining your physical health. However, what you do after a session is just as important as the treatment itself. Post-treatment care can help maximise the benefits of sports therapy and support your body’s recovery.
Here are some essential aftercare tips for anyone who’s recently had a sports therapy session:
1. Stay Hydrated
Hydration is key after any sports therapy treatment. The increased blood flow and muscle manipulation during your session can leave your body slightly dehydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins, reduces the likelihood of post-treatment headaches, and supports overall recovery.
2. Use Magnesium Oil
Magnesium oil can work wonders in soothing post-treatment muscle soreness. Gently massage it into the areas that were worked on to help ease any discomfort and promote relaxation.
3. Take an Epsom Salt Bath
Soaking in an Epsom salt bath is a relaxing way to support muscle recovery. The magnesium in the salts can help reduce inflammation and relieve tension. Simply add a couple of handfuls of salts to warm water and soak for 15–20 minutes.
4. Try Ice Therapy for Soreness
If you’re experiencing any noticeable soreness, ice therapy can help. Wrap an ice pack in a towel and apply it to the affected areas for 5–10 minutes to reduce swelling and inflammation. Never place ice directly on the skin to avoid ice burns.
5. Avoid Strenuous Activity
Your body needs time to recover after sports therapy. Avoid intense physical activity or heavy lifting for at least 24 hours. This gives your muscles time to rest and adapt, allowing you to fully benefit from the treatment.
What to Expect After Sports Therapy
It’s completely normal to feel a little sore or notice mild bruising after your session, especially if deep pressure was applied. This is your body’s natural response and should fade within 3–4 days.
