If you’re dealing with elbow pain, stiffness, or a nagging ache that keeps getting in the way, it’s very easy to ignore it at first. You might assume it’s just a bit of overuse, that you “slept funny,” or that it’s simply something that will calm down on its own with a bit of rest…

But it’s not easing off – and now it’s starting to become a real nuisance.

If this sounds familiar, you’re definitely not alone – and we hear this all the time. Elbow pain is a common problem people come to us with at our physio clinic here in Banstead, Surrey, especially when it just doesn’t seem to be clearing up the way they hoped.

What Is Elbow Pain?

Elbow pain is extremely common, particularly in areas like Surrey where golf and tennis are enjoyed year-round. Two of the most frequently seen conditions are tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow. Despite their names, they are essentially the same type of tendinopathy – the difference lies in which side of the elbow is affected. You can easily be a golfer with tennis elbow or a tennis player with golfer’s elbow.

These conditions develop when the tendons around the elbow become irritated from repeated gripping, lifting, or swinging. For many people, elbow pain appears suddenly after a spike in activity. A classic example is taking the winter off, then jumping straight back into tennis or golf four or five times a week as soon as the weather improves. The tendons haven’t been conditioned to handle that level of load, resulting in an overuse syndrome. Simply “resting” the elbow rarely solves the problem. Tendinopathies don’t heal well through avoidance alone. Likewise, pressing directly into the painful area – something many people try at home – may actually worsen the symptoms. Proper intervention is essential, not just for pain relief but for preventing the issue from returning once you get back to your sport.

What are the symptoms of Elbow Pain?

Elbow pain often presents with a consistent pattern of symptoms, including:

These symptoms can significantly disrupt daily life. People often find they struggle with simple tasks such as opening jars, lifting shopping bags, typing, or even using a phone. On the court or course, elbow pain can affect power, accuracy, and consistency – leading to frustration and reduced enjoyment of the game.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Elbow Pain?

At Body Zest, we treat tennis and golfer’s elbow by first identifying the phase of the tendinopathy. If the tendon is in an acute, highly irritable state, our first priority is to calm the inflammation. This may involve hands-off approaches, lifestyle advice, and adjusting certain movements to stop the tendon from being continually aggravated. Once the tendon is ready, we introduce targeted strengthening exercises designed for the specific stage of healing. These exercises are demonstrated clearly in the clinic and provided through our online video library, complete with reps, sets, and instructions. Strengthening is essential, but only when introduced at the correct time. Strengthening too early or too aggressively can worsen symptoms.

One of the most effective tools we use is shockwave therapy. Unlike pressing on the tendon – which often increases pain – shockwave delivers a controlled sound wave into the tissue through ultrasound gel. This produces a targeted healing response in the tendon, helping to resolve long-standing inflammation and restore healthy tissue. It is safe, fast, and works beautifully alongside strengthening, mobility work, and manual therapy. Our goal is to reduce pain, restore function, and help you return to the activities you love – whether that’s golf, tennis, gym training, or simply moving through daily life without restriction.
